Also, overheads increase dramatically at such upload speeds.

Emule cannot keep the upload speed steady if the Upload Limit is set higher than around 90% of the line's max upload speed. The Max maintainable emule upload speed limit for this internet connection was around 67 KB/s (Test Run 1, Max IP Upload Speed = 75 KB/s), and 77 KB/s (Test Run 2, max IP Upload Speed = 84 KB/s). Conversely, the "unlimited" setting should only be used with SS activated as it decreases overhead by around 15%. Should only be used with "unlimited" upload. However, it decreases the overhead for "unlimited" upload. Upload SpeedSense (SS) consumes extra overhead if a lower-than-max upload limit is set. The Upload overheads are highest if Upload Speed Limit is set to "unlimited" (around 30%-32%).

This is the download bandwidth required to maintain uploads.

It also decreases as upload speed increases. Download overhead due to uploads ranges between 6% (best case) and 15% (worst case) of emule upload speed, at 10 KB/s upload. The % overhead decreases as upload speed increases, up to a point where they start to increase again. Upload overhead due to uploads ranges between 9% (best case) and 23% (worst case) of emule upload speed, at 10 KB/s upload. Since I cannot find a good explanation for the difference, I'll just assume the first results as a "pessimistic" case and the second ones as "optimistic" or "best case" results. For some reason the overhead was a lot smaller on the 2nd run.

The 2nd test run was done in the night with less people in the queue, and after resetting both the PC and the modem. I ran 2 identical test runs on the same machine. The overhead is then this measured speed compared to the speed reported by eMule in the status bar. I considered this to be the speed which ISP's generally advertise for their connections, and hence the speed which everyone knows for their connections. Bytes Sent/sec is the rate at which bytes are sent on the interface, including framing characters."

Windows defines these speeds as "Bytes Received/sec is the rate at which bytes are received on the interface, including framing characters. The "IP Speed" mentioned below was measured using Windows2K/XP performance counters (Network Interface - Bytes Received/sec and Bytes Sent/sec). Overhead, as mentioned in this test, is the excess bytes transmitted or received over the interface, as compared to the speed reported by eMule. I will post Part 2: Overheads due to Downloads as soon as I've performed the tests.ĮMule Overhead Measurement - UPLOAD ONLY (All downloads Stopped)

I've been wanting to do these measurements for a long time.
